Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,
consider well her ramparts,
view her citadels,
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.
Of all the cities, large and small, rich and poor, which existed in Canaan, God chose Jerusalem as the place where a temple would be built for his glory to dwell. It is understood that God does not need a house for living or taking cover; it is us who need this kind of religious elements to facilitate our understanding and relationship with him. Under the reign of Solomon, the city reached its peak and even today is not without importance in the political affairs of the world, despite the destruction that has been brought upon her throughout history. From the religious point of view, for Christians and Jews, Jerusalem remains the most important city in the world as a place of special reverence and reference.
Even more important to us than what it is today, Jerusalem is the place where the sons of God will dwell with our Heavenly Father for eternity, once all the events announced by the prophets in relation to the world take its course. Heaven and earth, as we know them today, are being kept for judgment day when a new heaven and a new earth will take their place so that all things are made new.
Today’s Jerusalem is but a dim shadow of the Jerusalem to come. Let us consider, then, with hope, that future that we ─all those who have accepted salvation and Lordship of Jesus Christ over our lives─ will enjoy in the presence of our God. To God alone be the glory!
