Today’s word for April 16, 2011

Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
Psalms 77:10

When we are going through tough times and crossing dark valleys we tend to think that God has forgotten us or, even worse that He has turned against us. In these cases we find it difficult to find comfort, sleep, and even spin coherent sentences and thoughts. It seems that the benefits of having a relationship with God are no longer available to us and much of our time is spent remembering the blessings of God which we enjoyed in the past. Amid the confusion and despair, the enemy takes advantage of our weakness and throws darts of fire to us which purpose is that we end up believing that there is no longer anything else to do and that all is lost. His plan is that we throw in the towel and that we end up believing that we have been defeated.

If anything, we must be clear is that circumstances are in no way a barometer of our spiritual condition. Some people think that when things go wrong or when our health is failing, it is because we are in sin. They say that if we are not enjoying financial prosperity is because there is something wrong with our lives. Such unsubstantiated claims can not come except from the heart of the father of lies, Satan, and are irresponsibly repeated by those who have become his pawns in order to cause harm and confusion amongst God’s children. Let’s see how the apostle Paul described his circumstances: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” Does this statement fit the image of the successful Christian these peddlers of the theology of prosperity want us to believe?

The apostle Peter complemented the idea this way: “If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” God has not abandoned us. Even if your circumstances indicate that you have been abandoned, do not believe it because it is not true. Keep putting your trust in God and very soon you will see His mighty hand at work. To God alone be the glory!
