The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they go down to the inmost parts.
Proverbs 26:22

It is unfortunate that many people think that gossiping is harmless entertainment. On the contrary, many conflicts and disputes have arisen because of the widespread practice of gossip. Some people have even made of gossiping their trade and profession. This practice is so prevalent that show characters have been created to produce laughter from the dire situations that the nefarious trade generates. An example of this is the Spanish comedian Jose Mota with his character’s La Vieja’l Visillo, an elderly woman from a village in Spain called Alcafrán, whose only job is to make people fight because of the  rumors that the old lady invents and disseminates just to have fun. The sketch shows that the problem is not gossip itself, but lending an ear to gossip. Our sinful nature makes us consider gossip as interesting and entertaining and we do not realize the immense damage it causes. Below, please find a link so you can see the sketch.

Gossip may be funny but in reality it is nothing more than a curse. James, the brother of the Lord Jesus, wrote: “So also the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Imagine what a great forest is set aflame by such a small spark” When we open our mouth we either bless or curse. The gossip is nothing but a curse because a blessing it is not. Let us beware of becoming instruments for the enemy by carrying gossip and let us not allow it to gain power and ground by lending our ears to it. Although gossip may look like something attractive, it is pure poison to our souls. Only the Holy Spirit of God should control our lives. To God alone be the glory!
