Fear and Wisdom

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10

The advantages of possessing wisdom are enormous. Still very few try to find it. Most people waste their time on things that do not produce benefits to them but rather are a source of grief and pain. Their role models are people with large fortunes, who live in mansions and palaces, which have monumental yachts to enjoy their summer vacation anywhere in the Mediterranean or any other place that is fashionable and fanciful, people who fly all over the world in expensive private jet planes. For them to achieve success is to accumulate vast amounts of money that will enable them to maintain the expensive lifestyle they enjoy. Their success is also measured by the coverage dedicated in celebrity magazines to their adventures (and their sorrows) and the number of magazine covers in which their images appear; obviously these are magazines dedicated to constantly monitor the smallest and most trivial details of their lives. Clearly, these people will never know what is the fear of the Lord. Nor those who consider them as heroes and idols.

The fear of the Lord is not fright or terror of a powerful being who can destroy us with his thought. The fear of the Lord is reverence and obedience, that is, the respect we owe to Him who created us and saved us from death. The fear of the Lord is to understand that our lives are totally dependent on him and we are clay in his hands with which he molds the features we have and we can and should use for the aggrandizement of his kingdom. The fear of the Lord is the knowledge of his person, his attributes and expectations in relation to us. The fear of the Lord is to understand the immense love and grace God has shown toward us. The fear of the Lord is living up to the supreme commandments to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Concentrate your plans and all your efforts to meet these two commandments and you will possess wisdom and knowledge beyond your wildest imagination. Just follow the Lord Jesus and you will be wise. Only to God be the glory!

The joy of fear

Fear the LORD, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
Psalm 34:9

The concept of the fear of God is something that many people have trouble understanding. When they read the word fear they immediately associate it with dread and horror. They think that walking in the fear of God is living constantly scared and afraid that God will punish them. Many try to contrast the fear of God with the teachings of love that our Lord Jesus Christ gave and they have even tried to make others believe that the God of the Old Testament is different from the God of the New Testament by making one a being of wrath and the other a being of love. This is precisely where they get more confused because they can not understand that on God love and mercy as wrath and justice can coexist. What allows these conflicting concepts to be consistent in the person of God is his grace which has been shed in abundance and made available to anyone who wants to take shelter in it.

The fear of God is nothing but showing respect, reverence and obedience to God. The fear of God is the attitude that puts us in our just standing before God as creatures he has created and chosen and to whom he has offered grace and forgiveness so we can live now in righteousness and holiness through the merits earned by our Lord Jesus Christ in the cross of Golgotha.

This attitude of respect, reverence and obedience brings juicy rewards for  those who show it before God, making it doubly beneficial. Let us look, therefore, to always walk in the fear of God, and not to dread and panic but rather with peace and joy because we are children of God and the recipients of his matchless love. To God alone be the glory!

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
For through wisdom your days will be many,
and years will be added to your life.
If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.
Proverbs 9:10-12

Many often wonder why we never run out of wars, economic crises, pain, hunger, pestilence, incurable diseases, violence, insecurity, poverty, injustice, white slavery, drug trafficking, terrorism, repression, tyranny, totalitarianism, anarchy, crimes, kidnapping, fraud, gangs, executions, corruption, and other thorns that are part of the bouquet of brambles with which the world pays us. All the time we become victims of fraud that the world performs with our lives. Is just a simple bait and switch fraud technique. As per the Wicktionary, bait and switch is an unscrupulous and sometimes illegal sales technique, in which an inexpensive product is advertised to attract prospective customers who are then told by sales personnel that the inexpensive product is unavailable or of poor quality and are instead urged to buy a more expensive product. Also, (by extension) any similar deceptive behavior, especially in politics and romantic relationships. All the time the world is using this simple but effective way of defrauding us. On the one hand the world offers three attractive baits: money, power and fame. On the other hand we only receive the long list of thorns mentioned above.

When will we stop being naive and stupid so we can get the most enduring and untouchable treasure that someone may have in this world? When will we be looking for things that do not produce happiness but sadness and pain? When will we stop being puppets of the evil trilogy made by Satan, the world and our own flesh? If we wish to gain wisdom we must begin to live in the fear of God. This does not mean we will live in a state of dread and apprehension. It means that we behave at all times with obedience, reverence and respect for our Creator, that is for our God and heavenly Father. This is the secret of happiness and peace. To God alone be the glory!

Easy recipe?

Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.
Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
Psalm 34:11-14

Here is a recipe for those who want to know what it is and live in the fear of the Lord. Although the recipe looks simple at first glance it is not so when we look at it in some detail. At first sight, the prescription consists of four ingredients: restrain the tongue from evil, refrain from deceitful lips, stay away from evil and do good and seek peace and pursue it. The first ingredient, restrain the tongue from evil is almost impossible to achieve in this world where people talk and talk without end. Many think that if they talk pretty using convoluted and fanciful words they will be counted for wise when in fact the opposite is true for the more you talk, the more mistakes you’ll make. Additionally we have that people love to grumble and complain about everything and just for nothing and finally, people delight in criticizing others, ignoring the plank that they have in their own eye. Also, we have the issue of lies. Of all the seeds that Satan has planted in the heart of man the one that has put more roots is the seed of deceit. Everybody makes use of lies thinking they will resolve their issues and all they achieve is to dig themselves deeper into the hole.

Departing from evil by itself would allow us to go a long way in our path toward spiritual maturity but we know it is not easy to depart from evil when we are surrounded by it on all sides and our flesh is weak. How much more difficult to do good! Departing from evil is hard work, doing good requires a titanic effort from us. Finally the search for peace is not an activity encoded in the human genome, by contrast, we argue and fight for even the smallest things. We are never satisfied until we impose our ideas and our views on the ideas and the criteria of others. If we coming up with any of the four ingredients is difficult, imagine how much more arduous and tenacious it will be to put all four ingredients together. Through our own efforts we will never achieve anything. Only the transforming power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives without restrictions will allow us to enjoy the advantages and benefits of living in the fear of the Lord. To God alone be the glory!

All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the LORD,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the LORD
and he rules over the nations.
Psalm 22:27-28

Something that has always characterized the world is disunion. The nations of the world in general have shown a great inability to work together towards common goals. Some nations have sought to establish agreements and pacts that allow them to work with well-defined ground rules in order to remove bureaucratic obstacles so they can advance economically. However, national interests prevail above these agreements and pacts and as soon as a crisis breaks the differences of opinion and disagreements on economic, fiscal and monetary policies come to light and show how divided they are. Many of these disputes end up in tragic conflicts with great bloodshed. Political and economic systems developed by mankind have greatly improved over time but they still show serious flaws that cause social imbalances and fuel dictatorships.

How different will be in the not too distant future when the world government will be under the authority of the perfect King of kings and Lord of lords, the Lamb that could open the seals, our Lord Jesus Christ. All nations will experience an unprecedented boom. The people will flock to pay their respects and to honor and to multitudinous recognize the majesty of the Lord . There will be no differences based on religion because religion will be thrown aside and replaced by the true and pure way to enjoy a relationship with God. There will no more politics to divides us. Unanimously, all of us will submit to the only perfect authority with joy and satisfaction and at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Meanwhile, let us wait with hope for that glorious future that is soon coming. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word for April 3, 2011

Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
Proverbs 3:16-17

If all the riches of the world were to be distributed among all people of the earth, there would not be enough money to make everybody a millionaire. In fact, everybody would be poor. Not so if what were to be distributed was wisdom. The source of wisdom is inexhaustible; there is much more than enough to go around. To gain wisdom is something relatively easy to accomplish, in fact, too simple. However, very few are wise despite the abundance of wisdom that is available for all. We have said it before: fear of the Lord is the key to wisdom. We have also said that to have fear of the Lord does not mean that we need to be afraid of Him but that we must show reverential respect and obedience towards Him. To understand what the fear of the Lord is, we need to be able to communicate with him. To be able to communicate with Him, we need to know Him and to have a relationship with Him. Only one thing stands in our way to prevent the above mentioned steps to happen: sin, which blocks all possibility of communication with God because it separates us from Him. In Jesus we can find the solution to this quandary, because He took upon Himself all the sins of the world so every obstacle preventing us from having access to the Father would be removed and we could have a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. How easy and yet how difficult it is for man to understand these things!

Now we, who have had the privilege of knowing God, let our lives be full of the fear of the Lord so we may receive wisdom from above and so we may partake of all the benefits it entrails. Then, we will live long lives full of honor and riches, walking along pleasant ways, enjoying peace and all other benefits that come along with it. Let us share with others what Jesus has done for us so they may also have access to the blessing of being made children of God and the privilege of walking down peaceful and joyful paths. There is more than plenty of wisdom from above for all who come to Jesus! Only to God be the glory!
