Work and stewardship

The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and whoever protects their master will be honored.
Proverbs 27:18

The word of God is very clear when addressing a subject, therefore it should not be a surprise the accuracy and simplicity with which it addresses the most important issues of our lives. Two of these issues are work and stewardship. In these two subjects the word of God establishes and reinforces the concepts that should guide the life of God’s children. Work and stewardship are functions assigned to man from the very beginning of the existence of the human race. Our father Adam was assigned various tasks by the Lord in the garden of Eden so that he was not idle. Man was given the task of dominating the earth and multiply himself to put it into submission. God also placed man in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. Additionally, Adam was in charge of naming all the animals that God had created. Regarding stewardship it is clear that the task of cultivating and keeping the garden refers to this aspect. Even after Adam’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden he was in charge of working the ground from which he had been taken.

Our Lord Jesus Christ made reference to these two issues very strongly by means of the parables he used to teach people about the kingdom of God. Among these parables we can refer to the parable of the gold coins and the parable of the wicked tenants. In both parables Jesus spoke of the importance of stewardship and work. The apostle Paul also commented at length the issue urging everyone to work, not to be idle and to be always expectant and in readiness for the return of the Lord. Let us not ignore, then, in view of these teachings and exhortations to live a holy life dedicated to the tasks the Lord has entrusted to us. In due time the Lord will reward us with honor for the loyalty and commitment we have shown in carrying out the works which he prepared from before the foundation of the world for us to do. Only to God be the glory!

Wisdom, Knowledge & Understanding

For the LORD gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Proverbs 2:6-8

Oftentimes our heavenly Father protects us by blocking physical and personal attacks that the enemy of our souls constantly hurls at us. Other times, he grants us wisdom, knowledge and understanding so we can realize the dangers that beset us in our journey through this world. That wisdom, that knowledge and understanding are not things that can be achieved through academic studies. Rather, they are gifts that are received as part of the training that God provides to those who are sincerely committed to carrying out the plans God has for them. This requires walking in constant communication with God and we can only do this by approaching him through the daily and constant reading of his Word and through the conversation we establish with him every time we pray. To say we love God and not to be attentive to and willing to obey his instructions is deceiving ourselves and there is no better definition of a fool than he who is self-deceived.

Let us maintain ourselves forever in the path of justice, integrity, good conduct and faithfulness to God. When our Father sees that we are sincerely committed to the coming and the establishment of his kingdom, he will enable us so we can become useful tools in their hands. Remember at all times that the focus should be on him and not on us. So let us not put so much emphasis on the problems we face and let’s turn our eyes to the One who has the solution in his hands. Let us direct, therefore, the batteries toward the fulfillment of God’s perfect will in our lives. With the help of our Lord Jesus Christ and his Spirit success will come easily. To God alone be the glory!

I will praise God’s name in song
and glorify him with thanksgiving.
This will please the LORD more than an ox,
more than a bull with its horns and hooves.
The poor will see and be glad—
you who seek God, may your hearts live!
The LORD hears the needy
and does not despise his captive people.
Psalm 69:30-33

People cry out to God for many reasons but most of these petitions are selfish desires that will never be supported by God because they have no purpose other than the satisfaction of those who raised their cry. Many of these petitions are expressed without regard for the will of God and that is the main reason why these prayers are never answered. The apostle John makes this clear: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” And to ask according to the will of God is not just saying “Thy will be done” although it has to be said. Remember that the Holy Spirit of God knows what is in our spirit: “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” When we turn to our heavenly Father in prayer asking for anything let us make sure we’re asking in accordance with his will. His will is not unknown nor is it something that we ask for but we are not sure what we’re looking for. God’s will is clearly defined in his word and the only way we can know it is by constant reading of the Bible.

Do you want to know what is God’s will for your life? Read the word of God. Do you want to pray to God according to his perfect will? Include in your request “Thy will be done.” Do you want to make sure that God will hear you? First let us make sure that our heart is aligned with his heart. Only then we can be sure we are praying to the Father for His perfect will in the name of his Son Jesus Christ. Remember that every day we must decrease so that he can increase and be in control of our lives. Remember that the will of God is good, pleasing and perfect. To God alone be the glory!

His victims are crushed, they collapse;
they fall under his strength.
He says to himself, “God will never notice;
he covers his face and never sees.”
Psalm 10:10-11

The powerful and the evil have deceived themselves into believing that they are not under the authority of God and therefore they can act with impunity. This self-deception gives them a false sense of security that encourages them to continue to do as they will without paying attention to the terrible consequences that their reprehensible behavior is going to bring over their heads. The only way they know is the way of violence and abuse of power. Their joy and satisfaction lie in humiliating, bend and dominate their neighbors as often as possible. The more successful they are in their campaign to dominate others the closest they get to the trap that will catch them like the innocent critters. A false sense of security prevents them from seeing the sad future that lies ahead. Their arrogance gives them the encouragement they need to persecute the helpless, convinced that God does not exist and if he does, he does not see, he has forgotten his creation or he does not care what happens to this world.

The reality is quite the opposite. God is fully aware of all the persecution and abuse that these wicked followers and instruments of Satan have carried out with much pleasure on the innocent and the oppressed. The judgment of God does not tarry, although the fact that God sees time differently than we do makes us think that he ignores our suffering or he has forgotten us. Our faith must withstand the weight of oppression. Our hope is that sooner than later God will wipe away every tear from our eyes and will bring back the peace and joy we are entitled to as children of God. Do not let the enemy steal from you the joy of knowing that you are fully protected by the mighty arm of God. Remember that the Lord sees the trouble of the afflicted; considers their grief and takes it in hand. To God alone be the glory!

Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
Psalm 22:12-13

Sometimes our problems pile over each other and we end up feeling like we are surrounded by aggressive bulls whose size and animosity inspire us with terror. Almost everyone knows that a corral where a bull is grazing is not a safe place to enter. Being overwhelmed by trouble could also make us feel like we’re surrounded by aggressive beasts whose sharp teeth are ready to liquidate us with a deadly bite. Obviously, unless we have the powers of a superhero, we will not be able to come out of the uncomfortable and dangerous situation by our own means. It is in these moments of failure when God acts because it is then when we abandon our claims of self-sufficiency and let him work. Until we reach the point where we realize that there is nothing we can do for ourselves will continue to try to resolve things by ourselves and will impede God from doing his part. Now, experience tells us that we are very clumsy in this regard.

Let us surrender our problems to God, starting with the seemingly simple issues and we will soon realize that God is interested even in the smallest details of our lives. Are not we his children? If he shows interest for our simple things, would he not also be interested in more important things? Let us allow him to act even in the smallest things and gradually we will come to know and we will be certain that he can solve any problem, even if it looks impossible to us. Remember that we should not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, we should present our requests to God. To God alone be the glory!
