Abominable sacrifice

They sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to false gods.
They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was desecrated by their blood.
They defiled themselves by what they did;
by their deeds they prostituted themselves.
Psalms 106:37-39

God had a good reason to forbid the Israelites who left Egypt to mix with the people who temporarily occupied extensions of the land of Canaan and surrounding regions. Not only were they forbidden to associate with the pagan people but they were ordered to utterly destroy all of them. Many have used these instructions from God to the people of Israel , taking the word of God out of context, to say that God is a cruel and unloving god. They conveniently ignore the intrinsic justice that belongs to the divine nature. The barbarities and abominations that these people were accustomed to do in the name of their religion were truly horrific and despicable. One of his most gruesome ritual was the sacrifice of their children to idols. Giving children’s lives in bloody sacrifice to demons posing as gods is totally unacceptable and incomprehensible to those of us who live in more civilized times.

Yet somehow, in general we have allowed our children to be surrendered in sacrifice to the world and even to the enemy of our souls by condoning their desire to live according to the ideas that prevail in these times. In these postmodern times the material dominates over the spiritual, the exterior over the interior, the temporal over the enduring, the urgent over the important, the superficial over the fundamental, confusion over what is solid, randomness over firmness, the ambiguous over the absolute. All these new (actually not so new) ideas that are contrary to the principles and the established paths laid out in the word of God  are common and prevalent today. Our children have embraced these ideas and we have passively allowed the world to hijack the minds and hearts of our boys and girls. Let us act with decision and courage to rescue our children from the idols and demons that shape this decadent society. It is never too late when the purpose is the salvation of their souls. With the help of our Lord Jesus Christ we shall overcome. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word for June 10, 2011

I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens,
for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.
I know every bird in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields are mine.
Psalm 50:9-11

One of the most important reasons that should motivate us to serve God at all times and to be willing to carry out his work is gratefulness. We all have many reasons to be thankful to God. To begin with, God has shown us his love even when we were not worthy of such affection. Some people say “I’m not that special or unique, to get everybody to like me.” But to God, we are all very special. His love for us is the strongest force in the universe. Although creation is temporarily under the influence of corruption, within God’s master plan, everything will finally be under the authority of his profound and eternal love. Some people think that all they are all they do and everything they have is the product of their own efforts. Nothing more wrong. When we analyze our life we can realize the many opportunities when God has opened doors to our advantage and, of course, when he closed those doors that would not lead us to any gain.

Let’s be honest with ourselves and with God. Everything we are, or we do or we have, we owe it to God and to nobody else, and not recognizing this fact is a total act of ingratitude and disrespect. When we do something for God, let us do it with an appreciative attitude, otherwise, nothing that we do will be seen by God as a sincere and selfless act. In fact, if what we do does not spring from a grateful spirit, it is better not to do it because it would be mere hypocrisy. Let us examine our lives and let us identify the many occasions when God intervened in our favor. Soon we will realize that there are certainly many reasons to be eternally grateful to him. To God alone be the glory!
