Fatal attraction

—my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood
Proverbs 1:15-16

The world and his followers have but one purpose: to destroy our soul. To that end they use all kinds of tricks to make us deviate from the straight path that leads to God. All the kingdoms of the world and their splendor will parade before our eyes to attract our undivided attention and separate us from God’s plans. The will try to trick us into believing that our position in Christ is worthless and that following the teachings of the Lord is of no avail. They will make us believe that following Christ is something antiquated and dogmatic and that in light of scientific and philosophical breakthroughs it can be demonstrated that Christianity is just a myth. The world will use everything at its fingertips to confuse us so that we turn away from Christ. If all of God’s children would realize how subtle the world gets through our eyes and tries to take control of our minds and our hearts there would not be so many cases of Christians who have fallen and feel defeated.

Let us seek, therefore, the wisdom that comes from above, from the throne of God so that we can move through the world without falling victim to its tricks and deceptions. With our gaze fixed firmly on the goal and forgetting everything that lays behind let us strive to run the race with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith so that we will never tire or lose courage. With love let us hope for his return that is not long in coming. Instead of running to do evil, let us always hasten to do good, which pleases God. In this way we will be honoring the name of Christ, which is above every other name in all of creation. Only to God be the glory!

The sex trap

My son, give me your heart
and let your eyes delight in my ways,
for an adulterous woman is a deep pit,
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
Like a bandit she lies in wait
and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
Proverbs 23:26-28

One of the most destructive messages that the world sends daily to humanity is that sexual licentiousness is acceptable and normal. If by normal they mean widespread and prevalent they are right but fornication and adultery are abominable in the eyes of God and directly undermine the stability of the family and thus of society. With the excuse that they are simply carried away by the love they feel, they give vent to their sexual desires and both women and men fall into a trap from which escape is extremely difficult. Freud and his followers wanted to make the world believe that the vast majority of mental and behavioral disorders have their origin in the repression of sexual instincts. The solution, according to the famous Austrian psychologist is to unleash those instincts to release the tension caused by the opposing forces of the Id and the Superego. This liberation of the instincts resulted in a society dominated by the Playboy philosophy, free love, open marriage, free unions, feminism and homosexuality activism, among others.

The word of God teaches that sexuality is a good thing if it is practiced within the sanctity of marriage. Any other expression of sexuality outside the marriage becomes debauchery and sin and as such can only lead to destruction and death. Anyone who possesses wisdom knows the signs identifying the traps that have been lying on his way to catch and destroy him and so he can avoid them. He who is well grounded in the Word of God will be protected and will not be deceived by the false promises of freedom and well-being offered by the world and the adversary to those who want to live by their animal instincts. Find guidance on the word of God and you will get wisdom and joy to boot. To God alone be the glory!

Majesty and humility

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

Only the love of God is able to carry out a task such as that of the incarnation. The perfect love of God was the source of power for the Son of God to strip himself of his majesty and to clothe himself in humility to save humanity. He who dwelt in heavenly glory and in perfect harmony with the Father and the Holy Spirit left his throne to descend to dwell among human misery and the evil that men housed in the depths of their hearts. The Creator and Author of life descended from heaven to bring light to a lost humanity, thereby ending darkness. Despite having taken the form of a servant his greatness and majesty was recognized by many and his grace and his love did not go unnoticed. His plans were completed successfully to the letter and the world was able to know salvation.

Need direction? The Lord Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor. Let his hand be your guide so that your foot will not stumble and you can live safe and secure. Are you discouraged and tired? Jesus Christ is Mighty God and he will help you because he has promised: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Do you think that nobody in the world loves you? The Lord Jesus Christ is the Everlasting Father and his love and compassion are unparalleled and have no end. Are you overwhelmed by worries and insecurity? Jesus is the Prince of Peace and only in him you will find calm and rest for your troubled heart. We sincerely hope that the true light that gives light to every man, life himself, will fill you all with his blessing and that love and glory become a reality in your lives. Merry Christmas! To God alone be the glory!

A discerning son heeds instruction,
but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
Proverbs 28:7

Someone said that there are three ways to obtain a fortune. Earning it through hard work, receiving it as an inheritance and finally stealing it. There are those who cynically said that nearly all fortunes have been made the last two ways and rarely we know of any that has been obtained legitimately and by self-effort.  We will not go into details but for the sake of conciseness let us say that the vast majority of personal wealth is obtained through inheritance. Therefore, many people who have large accumulations of money in their bank accounts and possess many properties can do so because their parents or grandparents worked hard to create such a fortune that now they, their children are enjoying. If the children squander what their parents had to work so hard to get, the waste becomes a way to dishonor their parents. Even if we have not received a fortune from them, our parents worked hard so that we might live more comfortably now than they ever did. They also fed us, clothed us and helped us get an education.

Let us manage our finances with wisdom and prudence. Whether the goods we possess were obtained through an inheritance or have been obtained from our work, that capital one day will be for those who survive us, if the Lord does not return before. Let us be good stewards of our Lord and God Jesus Christ who is the only one who really has allowed us to have something to support us and also to leave our descendants, whether treasures or an education. To God alone be the glory!

I will proclaim the LORD’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
Psalms 2:7

The major doctrine which characterizes all monotheistic religious systems is the assertion that God is one. There are no other gods besides God, Creator of the universe. What distinguishes Christianity from other monotheistic position is that God is a both one and triune God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is something that has been very difficult to understand for those who want to analyze everything under the approach of reason without stopping to think that reason is only one side of the coin, the other side being faith. In any case, although the term Trinity itself does not appear in the Bible, many portions of the word show and support this doctrine. Those who adverse the Trinitarian position claim that God does not and cannot bear children. It’s plain arrogance to say something about God that God has not revealed to man through his word. To deny that God has the Son is to deny all of God’s work carried out to save man from condemnation.

And you, who do you say is Jesus Christ? For you, is Jesus a prophet, a guru or God made man, the Savior of mankind? The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit puts it this way: “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” If this description do not clarify the matter, it means you have a thick blindfold over your eyes that keeps you from capturing the glorious reality of our wonderful Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God and his redemptive work. If you can understand it, only to God be the glory!

The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!
Do not spend your strength on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.
Proverbs 31:1-3

In the last chapter of the book of the Proverbs of King Solomon, as in Chapter 30, we see again the wise king making use of a pseudonym to dissert about one or two specific topics. The first of these subjects is that of life’s pleasures. King Lemuel‘s mother ─ Bathsheba or another figure of speech? ─ instructs him to not spend his strength on women. It is obvious that Solomon ignored the valuable instructions left by his mother, because according to the first book of the Kings, Solomon ended up having 700 wives and 300 concubines. This obvious and gargantuan excess brought terrible consequences to Salomon’s life for his heart was perverted by the negative influence of these women and he ceased to be faithful to God by shamelessly turning to idolatry. God Himself appeared to him personally on two occasions to prohibit him from continuing with idolatry, but the spiritual failure of the wisest man in history made him disobey the covenant, decrees and direct and specific instructions of God. In his reflections on life, Solomon concludes that women became a trap for him, that their idolatrous hearts had been a trap net for him and that their arms were heavy chains around him.

In the world’s collective unconscious there are still remnants of an era when having several “fronts” was common and acceptable, and although today such behavior might not be too visible ─at least publicly, man’s heart is as inclined to infidelity as it once was. No wonder Solomon rightly concludes that there is nothing new under the sun! The truly wise man does not have to conduct anthropological experiments as Solomon did to receive the wisdom that comes from above. By submerging oneself into the word of God one will find everything one needs to know to be able to lead a life that is pleasing to God. To God alone be the glory!

My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad indeed;
my inmost being will rejoice
when your lips speak what is right.
Proverbs 23:15-16

Wisdom and justice will always bring a companion along, happiness. A wise and just person hardly becomes involved in the serious problems that ignorant and foolish people attract upon themselves because of their senseless course of action. A wise and just man does not make decisions lightly but he weighs all options and all avenues of action displayed in front of him. Having carefully considered all options in light of the Word of God, and having also consulted with God through prayer, he makes the decision he considers most righteous because it adheres to the principles of life that Jesus left for us. The Holy Spirit is responsible for guiding his analysis and also for communicating his needs to the Father so that every step of the decision making process ensures perfect alignment with the plan his God and Lord has prepared for him and for creation. A wise man understands that he is not the center of the universe and that his scope of action has limits established by God, He knows that staying within those limits will guarantee the success of his plan.

Let us look our decisions in detail and if in doubt, let us not forget the fundamental ethical principle that Jesus taught us and that is known as the Golden Rule, that is: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” This way, our actions will be cause for celebration not only for our loved ones but also for others, especially those who also seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Let us, therefore, place the kingdom’s interests above our own interests and let us make sure that our actions are a source of joy to our Father and to those who love him. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word 3-17-2011

A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son
and will share the inheritance as one of the family.
Proverbs 17:2

There are servants who behave like real children and children who behave like common servants. That’s the way it always has been. I’m sure that in Pharaoh’s royal family there had always been people with royal blood and succession rights who could have taken responsibility for the management of the finances, commerce and trade of the world power that Egypt was. However, Pharaoh, noticing the wisdom and successful business acumen that a young servant, foreigner and convict named Joseph has shown, appointed him prime minister with authority over all his kingdom. In these postmodern times is very common to see children who have lost respect for their parents and in general have lost respect for any authority. They want to live in freedom, that is, as they understand it, in debauchery. They ignore every precept of submission and respect for their parents and make disobedience and scorn a lifestyle. Likewise, there are children of God who sometimes behave like enemy’s children; acting in a way that we know does not please God.

We must behave as the apostle John pointed out when he wrote: “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” God gave us understanding to know who his image is before us. Our Lord Jesus Christ, all man and all God, true God and eternal life, is the perfect model of a true son. Let us walk, then, in his footsteps and act like the true children of God we have been made and not as the mere servants we used to be. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word 3-13-2011

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.
Proverbs 13:1

Most ─if not all─ of those who read these thoughts are adults who, understandably, are no longer under the authority of their parents. However, if and when they accepted Christ as Lord and Savior they were placed under the authority of the King of kings and Lord of lords; so they need, as children, to be subject to the direction, care and discipline of our loving Father. Failure to recognize our position before the Father puts us in a dangerous path. In times past when people acted differently to what they claimed they believed, they were called a hypocrite. Today, when someone behaves that way, it is said that he/she is an open minded person. This is a good example of a couple of the many problems that postmodernism has brought us, ambiguity and confusion.

Let us not deceive ourselves or act as hypocrites. God is our Father and our authority. Neglecting his correction makes us stupid and insolent, two things that our Father will not tolerate and that He will continue to correct in our lives by using different methods to achieve His wise goals. Let us recognize our responsibility as the adults we are and let us position ourselves under the mighty hand of God. Obedience is the key to success in the life of a child of God. Walking the path of obedience always will bring us to a pleasant destination. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word 3-1-2011

I will proclaim the LORD’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
Psalms 2:7

While in context, this portion refers to a messianic prophecy – giving us much hope – it has a personal application as well as to what our attitude should be in regards to the fulfillment of God’s plan. It is very clear that we are children of God, this is something no one disputes or something that requires further explanation; other than to give us an exhortation to behave as the children of God that we are. One of the things that we, as children of God, must do is to proclaim God’s plan and decrees for humanity. We must remember that the world is under the authority of the enemy, although the world does not belong to him. The world, as such, is the enemy of God’s children. Worldly approach and views are not in accordance with the Father’s provisions. Each day that passes we see this postmodern society move farther and farther away from biblical principles to adopt destructive philosophies that degrade the dignity of human beings.

It is our duty to alert society about these harmful lifestyles in an intelligent and non-confrontational way, or we run the risk of getting undesirable results. The enemy has succeeded in presenting God as a vengeful and angry being. God is going to seek revenge; in fact, vengeance belongs to him and him alone. God will let his anger run free; it is his right to do so. Anger and revenge are an integral part of divine justice. The issue is that the world ignores the justice, mercy, grace and love that God offers mankind for its salvation. Humanity has been deceived by the enemy and ignores that God loves it. It is our duty to proclaim the message of love, peace and salvation offered by Jesus Christ to all who seek him. And we must do it in a firm but not confrontational way, full of compassion and love for souls that are being lost. Remember that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Proclaiming the Gospel, that is our duty. To God alone be the glory!
