But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;
you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;
you are the helper of the fatherless.
Psalm 10:14

One of the arguments of those who believe that God exists but has kept himself aloof of his creation (the so-called theistic position) is the level of violence and oppression observed in the world today. Violence and oppression are not new, there has always been much of them everywhere. We do not realize this fact because our selective memory makes us think the past was better and that’s simply not true. Since the world began and particularly since the fall of man, violence has not ceased to reign everywhere. Its partner, oppression, is the signature of all the empires and powers that have tried to control the destiny of the world or at least their own. Violence and oppression are normally exercised over the weak, those who are unable to fend off the vicious attacks hurled at them. But the violent and the oppressor will have to give account of their evil deeds before God’s throne. The proof and the evidence against them will be so overwhelming that they will have no way to make a defense to the charges that are registered in the books that will be opened  at the day of reckoning.

All of us have committed oppression and violence against someone once or several times in our lives. However, for those of us who have believed in Christ and have placed our hopes in his redemptive work at Calvary, all our faults recorded in the books of the judgement will be detached from our names because they will appear as been already settled in the Book of Lamb of God. When searching for the list of our crimes, they will only find white pages . But the wicked will have their pages completely covered by their evil deeds, for which they thought nobody would call them to account. Let us leave the application of justice where it belongs and let us concentrate on seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and everything else we will be added unto us. To God alone be the glory!

His victims are crushed, they collapse;
they fall under his strength.
He says to himself, “God will never notice;
he covers his face and never sees.”
Psalm 10:10-11

The powerful and the evil have deceived themselves into believing that they are not under the authority of God and therefore they can act with impunity. This self-deception gives them a false sense of security that encourages them to continue to do as they will without paying attention to the terrible consequences that their reprehensible behavior is going to bring over their heads. The only way they know is the way of violence and abuse of power. Their joy and satisfaction lie in humiliating, bend and dominate their neighbors as often as possible. The more successful they are in their campaign to dominate others the closest they get to the trap that will catch them like the innocent critters. A false sense of security prevents them from seeing the sad future that lies ahead. Their arrogance gives them the encouragement they need to persecute the helpless, convinced that God does not exist and if he does, he does not see, he has forgotten his creation or he does not care what happens to this world.

The reality is quite the opposite. God is fully aware of all the persecution and abuse that these wicked followers and instruments of Satan have carried out with much pleasure on the innocent and the oppressed. The judgment of God does not tarry, although the fact that God sees time differently than we do makes us think that he ignores our suffering or he has forgotten us. Our faith must withstand the weight of oppression. Our hope is that sooner than later God will wipe away every tear from our eyes and will bring back the peace and joy we are entitled to as children of God. Do not let the enemy steal from you the joy of knowing that you are fully protected by the mighty arm of God. Remember that the Lord sees the trouble of the afflicted; considers their grief and takes it in hand. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word 3-2-2011

like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
His victims are crushed, they collapse;
they fall under his strength.
He says to himself, “God will never notice;
he covers his face and never sees.”
Psalms 10:9-11

There is a group of people who do not rule out completely that God exists, rather, they do not rule out the possibility that God exists. They believe that since it can not be proven by the scientific method that God exists, it can neither be proven that God does not exist and therefore, they rather live in doubt. They never end up deciding if they are atheists or theists. These people swim between two waters and never assume either position. In fact, they rather wait until the last moment of their lives to make a decision, unfortunately, when it will be too late. Sometimes they say: “It is possible that God exists, but how I can know for sure?” This kind of attitude and skepticism regarding the existence of God fits very well with the postmodern thought that has been promoted with much success in these current times of globalization. For them, what God has revealed through His prophets, His written Word and his Living Word has no validity.

To assume this middle of the road position carries a high risk of failing to receive the forgiveness of God for salvation. They are putting their eternal state in danger and might never leave the state of condemnation in which they live. We must act with great compassion toward these people and pray to the Father for opportunities for us to present the testimony of the gospel to them. Remember, the Holy Spirit is responsible for their conversion. Let us take into account that the people we deal with daily have different points of view and if it is not through us, how would they know that they need to invoke the name of the Lord to be saved? Here’s an interesting challenge for today. Act according to what the Holy Spirit tells you and fulfill the work that has been entrusted to you. To God alone be the glory!
