Strength

With your help I can advance against a troop;
with my God I can scale a wall.
Psalms 18:29

For the children of God it should not be a secret that the strength comes from God. It seems simple to say and to understand, but in practice we forget this great truth and believe the lie that we have been fed since childhood. In practice we ended up relying on our own strengths, skills and resources to address the difficulties that stand in our way. Not surprisingly, then, that from time to time we have to stand up to situations whose only purpose is for us to learn how to trust in God and not in our own strength. Do not let pride keep you from listening to the voice of the Spirit of God leading to all obedience and good behavior. Let us always to consider the purpose of the trial and learn how to depend more and more of God.

That with the help of God we can confront armies does not mean that when we find a closed door on our way we have to tear it down. God opens and closes doors and sometimes, even when our purposes look right, God blocks the way for us to lead us in another direction. He knows better than anyone what is best for us and always will be pointing the way for us to find the path of justice and truth. Do not feel afraid of any difficulties that interfere with our progress in the path to God. As long as we go in the right direction God’s strength will be supporting us to overcome all that opposes us. To God alone be the glory!

Today’s word for July 29, 2011

our oxen will draw heavy loads.
There will be no breaching of walls,
no going into captivity,
no cry of distress in our streets.
Psalm 144:14

Peace and Prosperity. The dream and goal of many people. People who have achieved these goals have realized that they must work very hard to get them. They also know that as much or more effort is required to keep what has been achieved. Great leaders have led nations through wars and catastrophes and have left their names engraved in history but the peace and prosperity for which they fought so hard, most likely will be long gone. All the nations have poor memory and soon forget that human plans can only achieve ephemeral successes and that nothing is safe if it does not come from God. Some leaders have tried to make his followers believe that their plans are a reflection of God’s plans and the people have swallowed this lie hook, line and sinker.

Which one of today’s leaders can say with David, “Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.”? Can you imagine any of them publicly expressing their trust in God with sincerity and confidence? I fear that secularism has gained valuable ground from faith in this area . The portion of the word we have placed at the beginning of this reflection is followed by this other portion: “Blessed is the people of whom this is true; blessed is the people whose God is the LORD.”  A nation can not obtain and maintain economic success and peace unless it has the support of God and God’s support does not come by decree. God’s support is only available to those who have made the decision to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and not in the steps  the world. May God raise leaders who can govern with wisdom until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords. To God alone be the glory!
